“Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time” Story Details From E3

Ratchet & Clank’s new next-gen series debuted in 2007, titled Ratchet & Clank Future. Fans were given another taste a year later, with the short but fun downloadable installment called Quest Focomr Booty. Now the series is back for real with Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the Playstation 3. Get ready for even more third-person style platforming, RPG-like gun leveling systems, and some entirely new features that you may not expect.

A Crack In Time takes place shortly after Quest For Booty, as Ratchet continues his search for Clank. But don’t get the wrong idea. Ratchet’s search is a very small part of a story that appears to go much deeper than that of any Ratchet & Clank game before it, as Ratchet is confronted by another of his kind. Those that played Tools of Destruction may have assumed that Ratchet was the only remaining member of the Lombax race, for that is what the game implied. Not only that, but it seems that this new Lombax has taken it upon himself to be a guardian of time itself, meaning it’s his job to make sure people don’t make use of time for their own evil ends. That’s right; apparently Dr. Nefarious has found a way to manipulate time itself, and so this new Lombax character has enlisted Ratchet to help stop him. The intent of developing studio Insomniac is to take things much more seriously than in past games in terms of story and answer some of the series’ critical questions, even though they concern issues that the average R&C fan wouldn’t really ponder more than twice. The idea is to take things to a new level.

The game’s undeniable theme of time manipulation also translates to the gameplay itself. Over the course of the game the player switches off between playing as Ratchet & Clank, as both their stories begin to come together. When playing as Clank, you can step on individual time pads and record your actions, and then you play them all over at the same time. As you can imagine, this can be really handy for solving puzzles and defeating bosses, etc.
