Red Dead Redemption Review For Xbox 360 and PS3
In 2004 Rockstar released a western-style third-person shooter called Red Dead Revolver. This year the franchise returns in the form of a game called Red Dead Redemption. However, forget most of what you remember about the last game, because the series is getting something of an overhaul. Redemption is a western-style third-person shooter, but it’s also an open-world sandbox-style action game, in the vein of Grand Theft Auto.
Having said that, the main character is also different from the first game. This time players take on the role of John Marston, an ex-outlaw who has settled down and given up his old ways. Soon, however, he is forced to leave his home and family and venture out into the open range. And boy is it an open range. A vast virtual space is before the player, but he will have to unlock each area as he goes along, much like in GTA games in the past. Also like GTA, in Redemption there is much focus on the seeking out and acceptance of mission and side-missions that will gain you money and prgression in the storyline. In the wild, you can do pretty much whatever you want, from traveling to hunting wildlife to tracking down and killing bad guys.
In the end, however, it’s still the same shooting game fans know and love. There is a variety of combat equipment at your disposal, such as pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Akin to Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood, Redemption features an ability fans will remember from Revolver, called Deadeye. When activated, Deadeye slows down time and allows for more precise aiming. Later in the game you can acquire an upgrade that allows you to slow down time and take out multiple enemies in rapid succession.
Apparently there will be a multiplayer mode of some sort, but Rockstar has yet to disclose just how it will work. One thing is for sure; it would be a heck of a lot of fun to gang together with some players online and cause mayhem in Red Dead Redemption’s intricate and responsive world.
Red Dead Redemption is slated for release this fall on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Fans of both Red Dead Revolver and the Grand Theft Auto series would do well to give it a shot. With the exception of 2005′s Gun, nothing has ever really been done like this before.
